The situation is uncannily similar to the run-up preceding the debut of the original iPhone in January 2007, including many of the same engineers and software teams at Apple — such as those who built the iPhone Mail, Calendar, and Safari apps — disappearing into a black hole.

As usual, Gruber hits the nail on the head about what “The Tablet” will be and won’t. It seems like most are thinking the same way they were before the iPhone was unveiled. Back in late 2006 everyone knew the iPhone was coming but thought it was just going to be an iPod that could make phone calls. Anyone expecting The Tablet to just be a big iPod touch isn’t giving Apple very much credit.
